A long time ago deep in the African bush, Rich and his brothers were on foot, tracking lions safari with a Shangaan tracker named Phineas. Stopping every evening for dinner around the campfire the inquisitive boys would ask Phineas the names of the just about every local animal in an effort to improve their Shangaan language skills.
One evening the chef served up some delicious chicken legs for dinner. These were not just regular chicken legs… they were made from a wild chicken called a Guineafowl. Wanting to know the name of this bird, Rich’s youngest brother Lawrence piped up and asked Phineas how it was called in his native tongue. “M’Cluckson Chicken" was his answer. “M’Cluckson Chicken?" repeated the boys… letting that beautiful sounding phrase rest on their lips like the succulent grilled meat they were enjoying.
Many years later when Rich was running a food truck he decided to sell chicken one day.. and wow was it a hit. An idea came to mind and he thought maybe he should develop a grilled chicken restaurant… but what to call it? Hmmmm. ‘McCluckon’s! What a great name?!?!’ he thought. But as he peered across the road from where he was brainstorming he noticed a competing restaurant that sold burgers called McDonalds.
Not wanting to wake a sleeping giant he decided to remove the M from the name and simply call the business Clucksons. And the rest as they say is history.
